Mounting Awnings on Siding
How to Install Door Awnings on Siding: The "Header Board" Method
Installing a door awning directly onto vinyl or aluminum siding is a common challenge for Canadian homeowners. Siding itself is not structural—it is a thin shell protecting your home. If you try to bolt an awning directly through it, the siding will crush, leak, or fail to hold the weight of the snow load.
To solve this, we recommend the Header Board Method. This involves mounting a solid wood board securely to your home's studs to create a flat, structural surface for the awning.
1. Why This Method is Necessary
- Structural Integrity: Palram-Canopia awnings must be anchored to a solid surface. Siding floats on the wall; it cannot hold anchors.
- Flat Surface: Awnings require a perfectly flat mounting wall to ensure the gaskets seal properly against rain. Siding is uneven (lapped).
- Leak Prevention: The board allows you to seal the top edge against the siding, preventing water from running behind the awning.
2. The Solution: A Wood Header Board
As seen in the images below, a pressure-treated wood board (often a 2x8 or 2x10, cut to length) is mounted over the siding. This board acts as an adapter plate.
Option A: The Natural Look For a warm, rustic aesthetic, you can stain the wood to match your door or porch columns.

3. Installation Steps
Step 1: Preparation & Marking
- Locate the structural studs behind your siding using a stud finder.
- Cut a piece of pressure-treated lumber (e.g., 2" x 10") to be slightly wider than your awning.
- Pro Tip: If you are installing a Sophia or Nancy awning, ensure the board is tall enough to accommodate the full height of the mounting bracket.
Step 2: Mount the Header Board
- Pre-drill holes in the wood board to align with your wall studs.
- Apply a high-quality exterior silicone sealant to the back of the board where the screws will penetrate the siding.
- Secure the board to the house using heavy-duty Lag Screws (not included in the kit). These must go through the board, through the siding/sheathing, and deep into the solid wood studs.
- Important: Do not rely on the siding to hold any weight. The bolts must hit the studs.
Step 3: Seal the Top
- Apply a bead of silicone along the top edge of the board where it meets the siding. This prevents rain from dripping behind your new mounting plate.
Step 4: Install the Awning
- Now that you have a flat, solid wood surface, you can follow the standard Palram-Canopia installation manual.
- Hardware Note: The included kit hardware is typically for concrete/brick. Since you are now mounting into wood, you will need to purchase standard Wood Lag Screws or structural wood screws from your local hardware store.
*This method will apply to the following types of wall finishes:
- Stucco & EIFS (Synthetic Stucco)
- Stone Veneer & Rough Stone
- Log Homes & Wood Lap
- Corrugated Metal Siding
